Born in Bingley, Yorkshire, Les studied at the Bradford College of Art and Crafts and was employed as a designer for Tootal Ltd. He moved to N. Ireland in 1964 as Design Manager at the Ulster Print Works. From 1972 he was Senior Lecturer in Textiles at University of Ulster where he remained until his retirement in 1995. Les is an Associate Academician of the RUA, a member of the Watercolour Society of Ireland, a Past President of the Arts Society of Ulster and he is currently President of the UWS. He owns his own gallery - The Carnathan Gallery in Donaghadee where he holds an annual exhibition in November. His use of masking fluid and watercolour varnish makes his paintings both very recognisable and personal.
